Haftarah Tishah BeAv - Morning of Fast
Yermiyahu 8:13 - 9:23
8:13 Asof asifem ne'um-HASHEM ein anavim bagefen ve'ein te'enim bate'enah vehe'aleh navel va'eten lahem ya'avrum.
"I will surely consume them," says HASHEM. "No grapes shall be on the vine, nor figs on the fig tree, and the leaf shall fade; and the things I have given them shall pass away from them."'"
14 Al-mah anachnu yoshvim he'asfu venavo el-arei hamivtsar venidmah-sham ki HASHEM Elokeinu hadimanu vayashkenu mey-rosh ki chatanu l'HASHEM.
Why do we sit still? Assemble yourselves, and let us enter the fortified cities, and let us be silent there. For HASHEM our G-d has put us to silence and given us water of gall to drink, because we have sinned against HASHEM.
We looked for peace, but no good came; and for a time of health, and there was trouble!
16 Midan nishma nacherat susav mikol mitshalot abirav ra'ashah kol-ha'aretz vayavo'u vayochelu eretz umelo'ah ir veyoshvey vah.
The snorting of His horses was heard from Dan. The whole land trembled at the sound of the neighing of His strong ones; for they have come and devoured the land and all that is in it, the city and those who dwell in it."
17 Ki hineni meshale'ach bachem nechashim tzif'onim asher ein-lahem venishechu etchem ne'um-HASHEM.
For behold, I will send serpents among you, vipers which cannot be charmed, and they shall bite you," says HASHEM.
18 Mavligiti alei yagon alai libi davai.
I would comfort myself in sorrow; my heart is faint in me.
19 Hineh-kol shave'at bat-ami me'eretz marchakim ha'HASHEM ein beTziyon im-malkah ein bah madua hich'isuni bifsileihem behavlei nechar.
Listen! The voice, the cry of the daughter of my people from a far country: "Is not HASHEM in Tziyon? Is not her King in her?" "Why have they provoked Me to anger with their carved images--with foreign idols?"
20 Avar katzir kalah kayitz va'anachnu lo noshanu.
The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved!"
21 Al-shever bat-ami hashbarti kadarti shamah hechezikatni.
For the hurt of the daughter of my people I am hurt. I am mourning; astonishment has taken hold of me.
Is there no balm in Gil'ad, is there no physician there? Why then is there no recovery for the health of the daughter of my people?
23 Mi-yiten roshi mayim ve'eyni mekor dim'ah ve'evkeh yomam valaylah et chalelei vat-ami.
Oh, that my head were waters, and my eyes a fountain of tears, That I might weep day and night for the slain of the daughter of my people!
Oh, that I had in the wilderness a lodging place for travelers; that I might leave my people, and go from them! For they are all adulterers, an assembly of treacherous men.
And like their bow they have bent their tongues for lies. They are not valiant for the truth on the earth. For they proceed from evil to evil, and they do not know Me," says HASHEM.
3 Ish mere'ehu hishameru ve'al-kol-ach al-tivtachu ki chol-ach akov yakov vechol-re'a rachil yahaloch.
Everyone take heed to his neighbor, and do not trust any brother; for every brother will utterly supplant, and every neighbor will walk with slanderers.
4 Ve'ish bere'ehu yehatelu ve'emet lo yedaberu limdu leshonam daber-sheker ha'aveh nil'u.
Everyone will deceive his neighbor, and will not speak the truth; they have taught their tongue to speak lies; they weary themselves to commit iniquity.
5 Shivtecha betoch mirmah bemirmah me'anu da'at-oti ne'um-HASHEM.
Your dwelling place is in the midst of deceit; through deceit they refuse to know Me," says HASHEM.
6 Lachen koh amar HASHEM Tzeva'ot hineni tzofram uvechantim ki-eych e'eseh mipnei bat-ami.
Therefore thus says HASHEM of hosts: "Behold, I will refine them and try them; for how shall I deal with the daughter of My people?
7 Chetz shachut leshonam mirmah diber befiv shalom et-re'ehu yedaber uvekirbo yasim arbo.
Their tongue is an arrow shot out; It speaks deceit; one speaks peaceably to his neighbor with his mouth, but in his heart he lies in wait.
8 Ha'al-eleh lo-efkad-bam ne'um-HASHEM im begoy asher-kazeh lo titnakem nafshi.
Shall I not punish them for these things?" says HASHEM. "Shall I not avenge Myself on such a nation as this?"
9 Al-heharim esa vechi vanehi ve'al-ne'ot midbar kinah ki nitzetu mibli-ish over velo sham'u kol mikneh me'of hashamayim ve'ad-behemah nodedu halachu.
I will take up a weeping and wailing for the mountains, And for the dwelling places of the wilderness a lamentation, because they are burned up, so that no one can pass through; nor can men hear the voice of the cattle. Both the birds of the heavens and the beasts have fled; they are gone.
10 Venatati et-Yerushalayim legalim me'on tanim ve'et arei Yehudah eten shmamah mibli yoshev.
I will make Yerushalayim a heap of ruins, a den of jackals. I will make the cities of Yehudah desolate, without an inhabitant."
Who is the wise man who may understand this? And who is he to whom the mouth of HASHEM has spoken, that he may declare it? Why does the land perish and burn up like a wilderness, so that no one can pass through?
12 Vayomer HASHEM al-azvam et-torati asher natati lifneihem velo-sham'u vekoli velo-halchu vah.
And HASHEM said, "Because they have forsaken My Torah which I set before them, and have not obeyed My voice, nor walked according to it,
13 Vayalchu acharei sherirut libam ve'acharei haba'alim asher limdum avotam.
but they have walked according to the dictates of their own hearts and after the Baalim, which their fathers taught them,"
therefore thus says HASHEM of hosts, the G-d of Yisrael: "Behold, I will feed them, this people, with wormwood, and give them water of gall to drink.
15 Vahafitzotim bagoyim asher lo yad'u hemah va'avotam veshilachti achareihem et-hacherev ad kaloti otam.
I will scatter them also among the Gentiles, whom neither they nor their fathers have known. And I will send a sword after them until I have consumed them."
16 Koh amar HASHEM Tzeva'ot hitbonenu vekir'u lamkonenotutvo'einah ve'el-hachachamot shilchu vetavonah.
Thus says HASHEM of hosts: "Consider and call for the mourning women, that they may come; and send for skillful wailing women, that they may come.
17 Utemahernah vetisenah aleinu nehi veteradnah eyneinu dim'ah ve'af'apeynu yizlu-mayim.
Let them make haste and take up a wailing for us, that our eyes may run with tears, and our eyelids gush with water.
For a voice of wailing is heard from Tziyon: 'How we are plundered! We are greatly ashamed, because we have forsaken the land, because we have been cast out of our dwellings.'"
19 Ki-shemanah nashim dvar-HASHEM vetikach oznechem dvar-piv velamednah venoteichem nehi ve'ishah re'utah kinah.
Yet hear the word of HASHEM, O women, and let your ear receive the word of His mouth; teach your daughters wailing, and everyone her neighbor a lamentation.
20 Ki-alah mavet bechaloneynu ba be'armenoteynu lehachrit olal michutz bachurim merchovot.
For death has come through our windows, has entered our palaces, to kill off the children--no longer to be outside! And the young men--no longer on the streets!
21 Daber koh ne'um-HASHEM venaflah nivlat ha'adam kedomen al-penei hasadeh uche'amir me'acharei hakotzer ve'ein me'asef.
Speak, "Thus says HASHEM: 'Even the carcasses of men shall fall as refuse on the open field, like cuttings after the harvester, and no one shall gather them.'"
22 Koh amar HASHEM al-yithalel chacham bechochmato ve'al-yithalel hagibor bigvurato al-yithalel ashir be'ashro.
Thus says HASHEM: "Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, let not the mighty man glory in his might, nor let the rich man glory in his riches;
But let him who glories glory in this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am HASHEM, exercising lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness in the earth. For in these I delight," says HASHEM.
Haftarah Minchah - Fast Days
Yeshayahu 55:6 - 56:8
55:6 Dirshu HASHEM behimatz'o kra'uhu biheyoto karov.
Seek HASHEM while He may be found, call upon Him while He is near.
Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to HASHEM, and He will have mercy on him; and to our G-d, for He will abundantly pardon.
For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways," says HASHEM.
9 Ki-gavehu shamayim me'aretz ken gavehu drachai midarcheichem umachshevotai mimachshevoteichem.
For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts.
10 Ki ka'asher yered hageshem vehasheleg min-hashamayim veshamah lo yashuv ki im-hirvah et-ha'aretz veholidah vehitsmichah venatan zera lazorea velechem la'ochel.
For as the rain comes down, and the snow from heaven, and do not return there, but water the earth, and make it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower and bread to the eater,
11 Ken yihyeh dvari asher yetze mipi lo-yashuv elai reikam ki im-asah et-asher chafatzti vehitzliach asher shelachtiv.
So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; it shall not return to Me void, but it shall accomplish what I please, and it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.
12 Ki vesimchah tetze'u uveshalom tuvalun heharim vehagva'ot yiftzechu lifneichem rinah vechol-atzei hasadeh yimcha'u-chaf.
For you shall go out with joy, and be led out with peace; the mountains and the hills shall break forth into singing before you, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.
Instead of the thorn shall come up the cypress tree, and instead of the brier shall come up the myrtle tree; and it shall be to HASHEM for a name, for an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off."
55:1 Koh amar HASHEM shimru mishpat va'asu tzdakah ki-krovah yeshuati lavo vetzidkati lehigalot.
Thus says HASHEM: "Keep justice, and do righteousness, for My salvation is about to come, and My righteousness to be revealed.
2 Ashrei enosh ya'aseh-zot uven-adam yachazik bah shomer Shabbat mechalelo veshomer yado me'asot kol-ra.
Blessed is the man who does this, and the son of man who lays hold on it; who keeps from defiling the Sabbath, and keeps his hand from doing any evil."
3 Ve'al-yomar ben-hanechar hanilvah el-HASHEM lemor havdel yavdilani HASHEM me'al amo ve'al-yomar hasaris hen ani etz yavesh.
Do not let the son of the foreigner who has joined himself to HASHEM Speak, saying, "HASHEM has utterly separated me from His people"; nor let the eunuch say, "Here I am, a dry tree."
4 Ki-choh amar HASHEM lasarisim asher yishmeru et-Shabbtotai uvacharu ba'asher chafatzti umachazikim bivriti.
For thus says HASHEM: "To the eunuchs who keep My Sabbaths, and choose what pleases Me, and hold fast My covenant,
5 Venatati lahem beveiti uvechomotai yad vashem tov mibanim umibanot shem olam eten-lo asher lo yikaret.
Even to them I will give in My house And within My walls a place and a name better than that of sons and daughters; I will give them an everlasting name that shall not be cut off.
6 Uvnei hanechar hanilvim al-HASHEM lesharto ule'ahavah et-shem HASHEM lihyot lo la'avadim kol-shomer Shabbat mechalelo umachazikim bivriti.
Also the sons of the foreigner who join themselves to HASHEM, to serve Him, and to love the name of HASHEM, to be His servants--everyone who keeps from defiling the Sabbath, and holds fast My covenant--
7 Vahavi'otim el-har kodshi vesimachtim beveit tfilati oloteihem vezivcheihem leratzon al-mizbechi ki veyti beyt-tfilah yikare lechol-ha'amim.
Even them I will bring to My holy mountain, and make them joyful in My house of prayer. Their burnt offerings and their sacrifices will be accepted on My altar; for My house shall be called a house of prayer for all nations."
HASHEM G-d, who gathers the outcasts of Yisrael, says, "Yet I will gather to him others besides those who are gathered to him."
