Shavuot is the Pilgrimage Festival of Weeks

For Jews, observance of the three pilgrimage festivals is set forth in the five books of Moses, the Torah. One of them, Shavuot, the Festival of Weeks (i.e, seven weeks since Passover), will be observed this year from sunset Tuesday, June 7, until dark (about an hour after sunset) Thursday, June 9.
Also known as the Day of First Fruits, this festival likely has agricultural origins adapted to the needs of the Israelites. During temple times, the farmers would gather the first fruits and bring them to the city of Jerusalem. The farmers living close to Jerusalem would bring fresh fruits, while those who had to travel a long distance carried dried fruits. This occasion was celebrated with the music of flutes, timbrels and drums both by pilgrims and locals. At times, the king himself would join the procession to the Temple Mount. This ritual is no longer practiced in present-day Israel.
It is therefore customary to eat first grains, fruits, and milk products during Shavuot. A favorite modern celebration often includes ice cream, cheesecake, cream pies, fruits and other desserts.
A further meaning to this festival gives it yet another name: The Season of the Receiving of the Law, the Torah. Traditional Jews therefore focus on the study of the Torah and related books and commentaries during Shavuot. To do so, a widespread custom of studying all through one of the nights has been adopted by many Jewish groups. Often the study involves discussion of the Book of Ruth, a Moabitess married to a Jew who, when widowed and childless, chose nevertheless to go to Israel with her mother-in-law, Naomi, to live as a Jew. She remarried within her late husband's family. This resulted in King David being one of her descendants.
In the spirit of this festival, Beit Torah Jewish congregation will hold morning study/brunch services in Chino Valley both mornings at 10:30 am. A Memorial Yiskor service will be included during the second day.
Additionally, there will be an evening study session on Wednesday from 9:30-11 p.m., complete with potluck ice cream, non-dairy ice cream, fruits and other desserts. The public is welcome. For further details, call 237-0390, email ansheitorah@cableone.net or visit www.onetorah.org.
