Courier Coverage for High Holy Days 5771
5771 Ignoring the few typos and mistakes, this was a valiant effort by the Courier to remediate the oversight in not including us in their Rosh HaShanah article of 9/2/10. So enjoy the chuckles about breakfast instead of break fast, holidays instead of Holy Days, Tablernacles, no date for Yom Kippur, etc......I wonder what Taschlich bread I need to throw for this comedy of errors? ps Shabbat Shuvah will be at Leah's not at Robert Rd. May we all go from strength to strength! ======================================================= 9/7/2010 9:50:00 PM |
The Daily Courier The Beit Torah Jewish Congregation will observe the Rosh HaShanah service, with the Taschlich service, at 10 a.m. Thursday at Watson Lake Park. A convivial community lunch will follow the service. At that lunch and also during the welcome to the Rosh HaShanah dinner the night before, attendees will learn about food customs of Jews in many cultures. The dinner, with candle-lighting, will take place at 6:30 p.m. in Chino Valley. Beit Torah will also have services for the Sabbath of Return at 10 a.m. Saturday, the Kol Nidre service starting Yom Kippur at 6:15 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 17, and the Yom Kippur daytime service from 9 a.m. through breakfast at 3115 N. Robert Road in Prescott Valley. "One of the beautiful stories and traditions associated with the High Holy Days says that the Holy One records all the deeds of everyone and the judgments as to what will happen to them during the coming year," said Dr. Adele Plotkin, the primary lay leader of the Beit Torah Jewish Congregation. "The 'books' in which all of this is recorded are said to be sealed at the end of Yom Kippur. However, some say that the gates of heaven stay open a crack to allow for last-minute repentance when willow branches are beaten until leaves fall off, symbolic of the shedding of our last sins at the end of Sukkot, the Festival of Tablernacles," she said. "A similar ceremony of Taschlich, the casting away of sins, is done during Rosh HaShana, when Jews throw bread crumbs into a body of flowing water, symbolic of the casting away of sins."
