Purim
Promises Providing for Passover Needs
Special to Courier
One month before Pesach (Passover), Jews celebrate being saved from genocide in ancient Persia. For Purim there are three required observances: Hearing the Book of Esther; sharing a festive community meal; and providing for the needy so that all in the community will be able to observe Pesach completely if they want to and so that the community institutions involved with providing for the needy are maintained.
Providing for Pesach includes all basic needs such as clothing and Passover food as well as access to the Seders. These Seders contain at least a festive meal after the telling of the Exodus story when the Jews and a mixed multitude were saved from the oppressive tyranny of Egyptian Pharaohs. The festive meal is made up of foods special to Pesach and without leavened foods and other prohibited for Pesach foods such as corn, beans, and peas among others.
Even so, delicious food is a hallmark of Seders. So all are welcome to join us for our annual Beit Torah Seders to hear the Exodus story. Bring your questions and your appetites when we at Beit Torah Jewish Congregation (www.onetorah.org) will hold two Kosher Community Seders on Monday, April 14 at 6 pm and Tuesday, April 15 at 6:30 pm in the community meeting hall building at 735 East Rd 1 South between the church building and the food bank in Chino Valley. Sign up can be for one or both Seders. Volunteers to help with preparations, set-up, and clean up always welcome. To RSVP by April 6, please call 928-237-0390 or 928-227-0582 OR email ansheitorah@cableone.net .
